Wicketz Bristol – Youth Community Cricket
Wicketz Bristol provides free cricket delivery to girls and boys aged 8 – 16 in the heart of their communities.
What is Wicketz
Wicketz is a national programme funded by the Lord’s Taverners. The aim is to deliver free cricket in inner cities where sports provision is challenging, probably due to a lack of transport links or social and economic reasons. Hence why the Wicketz Bristol hubs are based in community centres in the heart of their communities.
At the Wicketz Bristol hubs participants of all abilities are welcome to join. Here cricket is made more accessible therefore adding to the fun. A variety of quick adaptations of the game using soft ball are played. This is likely to increase confidence to progress onto the hard ball version of the game if desired.

Taking part in a team sport such as cricket offers many skills. It is not just batting, bowling, catching, throwing, hand/eye coordination and fitness that is gained being part of Wicketz Bristol. As a result of learning a new skill, confidence is increased which opens up an individual’s potential. Participants at the Wicketz Bristol hubs will also learn essential life skills such as teamwork, communication skills and commitment.
There is an incentive scheme at Wicketz Bristol rewarding those who are committed with wrist bands, T-shirts and training balls. Those who are truly dedicated could get the opportunity to train at The Brightside Ground. Participants are coached by qualified and professional cricket coaches, with the occasional appearance from the Gloucestershire County players.
There are opportunities to play in local competitions, tournaments and festivals within Bristol throughout the year. Most noteworthy is the annual Wicketz Festival at Felsted School in Essex where all the Wicketz hubs throughout the UK come together for a two day festival of cricket along with some notable faces of the cricketing world.
Wicketz Bristol has been fortunate to link with other educational partners in Bristol. This includes the police, fire service, health services, local council, youth clubs and youth council members, as well as other sporting bodies and creative groups. These links will aim to broaden the horizons of those who take part and encourage them to be more community minded.
Crispin Shingler is the Wicketz Development Officer.
