Table Top Cricket
&
Table Cricket festivals offer a real progression as schools that enter have the opportunity to play at a local level, before hopefully going on to a County Final, Regional Final and if fortunate and skillful enough then on to Lords for the national finals day.
The game of Table Cricket provides an opportunity for youngsters with severe physical or learning disabilities to play competitive cricket. But it can be played by anyone and the weather cannot intervene.
As with all of the GCB festivals schools will have received coaching prior to any competition and therefore will have a clear understanding of the rules and how to play the game.
South Gloucestershire Team A win - Table Cricket 2011
After much planning and organisation, on March 22nd 2011 Gloucestershire Cricket Ground was buzzing with students anxious to compete once again for a trophy and the opportunity to play in The Lord Taverner’s National Finals Table Cricket in June. This year there were three teams competing in the Regional Final: South Glos Team A (pupils from Brimsham Green, Culverhill and Beacon Rise Schools) South Glos Team B (Pupils from Bradley Stoke, Culverhill and Brimsham Green) and a Team from BANES and three teams competing for a trophy: Warmley Park, New Siblands and South Glos C (pupils from Hanham Abbots, New Siblands and Culverhill Schools.) In both competitions a round robin was played, if there was a tie at the end then the numbers of wickets would be taken into account to determine the winning team.
The competition was very fierce throughout the day and the official umpires who looked very professional in their ‘whites’ had a difficult time making the decision for runs, out or a wicket. The games were also supported by Chris Munden who had been to all the schools prior to the competition and a team of 10 volunteers from BT who helped run the day.
Twenty Year 10 Students from The Castle School helped to umpire and score all matches, having received training the day before from Martin Mansell representing Lord Taverner’s they did a fantastic job both around the Tables and generally helping with the pupils, the professional manner in which they worked all day is a credit to their school. The matches were well contested but at the end of the third match South Glos team A were the outright winners and will represent the South West at Lord’s in June and South Glos C team won the trophy.
Congratulations to all teams for showing such tremendous team spirit throughout the day. Many thanks to Steve Silk and Chris Munden at Glos county Cricket Ground for supporting this event. To all the umpires, Martin Mansell representing Lord’s Taverners / ECB, John Lewis for some sponsorship towards the event and Mrs Fletcher for organising the students from the Castle School.
