Mahin Omar dismissed opener Malik for two but a second wicket partnership of 81 between Aoeeb Ilyas (62) and Khassain Lyas swung momentum back in Cardiff’s favour.
Jordan Harding (3-26) and Mohammed Jawad (3-14) both picked up late wickets as the visitors posted 170-7 from their 20 overs.
In reply, Bristol got off to a bad start when Harpreet Klair was bowled by Hayat for 6.
New man Jawad (37) shared in stands of 33 with Matt Shawcross (8) and 30 with Vishal Mamgai (15) but from 69-2 the homes side collapsed to 95-6.
Bilal Raja (24) and Omar (29 not out) gave their side late hope but with the run rate climbing Bristol ended up falling well short.
