Frocester host county’s biggest women’s softball festival yet
More than 107 players took part in Gloucestershire’s biggest ever Women’s Softball Festival.
The event at Frocester featured 11 teams from across the county and included two sides – Cam CC and Quedgeley and Hardwicke who were competing for the first time.
The festivals are part of a national ECB initiative to encourage women to take up cricket or to return to the game. Matches are eight-a-side, played with a softball and are designed to be a fun, sociable way to get active.
The day at Frocester also included music and a barbecue to give a real festive feel to proceedings. It followed on from other successful festivals at Broadway (run by Dumbleton CC), Stroud, Newent and Marshfield Cricket Clubs.
Gloucestershire Cricket Board (GCB) participation and growth officer Scott Tremain said:
“It is fantastic to see the Women’s Softball Festivals continuing to grow and attract more and more players. It was great to see a record number taking part at Frocester and hopefully we can keep building on this momentum. In addition to the two debutants, the other teams taking part at Frocester included the hosts, Frampton-on-Severn, Marshfield, Stroud, Corse and Staunton, Westbury-on-Severn, Woodmancote, Stinchcombe and Newent.
“Whether you are an experienced player looking to get back into the game or trying cricket for the first time the festivals are a great way to get involved.”- Scott Tremain
Each club taking part in the 2018 festivals will receive coaching from a qualified Gloucestershire Cricket Board coach as well as free bubbly and t-shirts.
There are still five more festivals running this summer, including a couple of mid-week evening events.
