The Gloucestershire Cricket Board (GCB) is to hold two free workshops to help clubs develop cricket for Under 9s.
2, 434 five-to-eight-year-olds took part in All Stars in Gloucestershire over the last two years and GCB projects and programmes manager Chris Munden said it was important to make sure there is a clear pathway for youngsters to stay in cricket.
He said: “All Stars has given us brilliant opportunity to expand youth sections and create a pathway where more boys and girls can experience and participate in cricket.
“To build on this we are keen to ensure that these youngsters can continue on their cricketing journey. We want to develop the provision of Under 9 club cricket to ensure there is a natural progression once children have completed All Stars.”
The workshops, which will be run by Chris and women and girls development officer Lisa Pagett will focus on the following areas:
- How to create an Under 9s section for clubs that don’t currently have this age group (or a youth section at all).
- Ensuring clubs with Under 9s are running cricket that is age and stage appropriate.
- Setting up a girls section.
- An update on ECB youth playing formats (although local youth leagues will also be in contact about this).
22% of All Stars participants in Gloucestershire were girls, with 21 clubs having 10 or more female players. However of the 62 All Stars clubs only 21% currently offer girls cricket at the Under 11 age group.
Lisa said this presented a real opportunity to grow the girls’ game in Gloucestershire.
She said: “The stats show that a significant number of clubs who don’t currently have a girls’ team have enough players to be able to set one up. If we are to grow the women and girls game we need to increase the percentage of clubs that offer girls cricket at a younger age and ensure girls get the chance to play with and against other girls. This is one area of the key areas we hope to support clubs with at these workshops.”
