[lead]Newent’s junior cricketers will be in safe hands this summer after 13 of the club’s youngsters agreed to help with coaching.[/lead]
The eight boys and five girls prepared for their new roles by taking part in an ECB Cricket Activators course run by Gloucestershire Cricket Board (GCB) clubs and programmes officer Eric Woodmason.
The five hour course helped the youngsters develop their leadership and communication skills as well as providing them with a raft of practices and games.
They were also given an insight into pitch preparation.
Eric said: “All the boys and girls really got stuck into all the activities and showed some real promise as coaches. This is really important as the club are organising their youth programme entirely themselves and will benefit from the extra help that the activators will provide.”
The Activators will now be put to work on Friday evenings, assisting coaches with the U9, U11, U13 and the girls’ group. They will also help out with the flagship All Stars (5-8) Cricket programme, when it launches at Three Ashes on May 19.
At the end of the session the activators were presented with personalised yellow t-shirts sponsored by Gooch Sports of Newent.
Club chairman, Richard Martin said: [blockquote size=”full|half|third|fourth|two-thirds|three-fourths” align=”left|center|right” byline= rating=”0|1|2|3|4|5″]“These youngsters will play an integral part in the future development of club. [/blockquote]I hope that they would all find the experience of coaching enjoyable, challenging and rewarding – I wish I’d had a similar opportunity to take my first into step to coaching all those years ago.”
