DAVE Jones and James Thomas put on 38 for the last wicket to guide struggling Stone to what could prove to be a vital home win over local rivals Thornbury 2nds in Division Two of the Bank House Gloucestershire County League.

Jones finished the day unbeaten on 66 while Thomas made a sterling contribution of four, holding up his end to clinch the victory with a ball to spare.

There was also a half century at the top of the order from Arron Lennard as Josh Lintern bagged 5-21 for Thornbury who earlier had 54 from opener Simon Weeks.

Second-bottom Stone now trail Frocester 3rds by just five points and are only eight behind Thornbury with three more rounds of games to be played.

Cinderford St John, who started the day at the top of the table, lost by 22 runs at home to Gloucester AIW Sports, and that allowed Charlton Kings – 72-run victors at home to Oldlands – to go top, captain Chris Burrow (78) top scoring as Dave Brookes bagged 5-41.

Division One leaders Cirencester slipped up by three wickets at home to Corse & Staunton, enabling Apperley to close the gap with a nine-wicket pounding of Westbury-on-Severn, Gareth Yardley pouncing with 4-31 while captain Luke Smith top scored with 74.

At the other end of the table, Cam boosted their chances of avoiding the drop with a five-wicket home success over bottom side Tetbury, Ben Holloway compiling an unbeaten 51 after taking 3-40.

There were also wins for Cheltenham 2nds over Redmarley, and Painswick who rattled up 293-4 in a 157-run home triumph over Kingsholm, Uddipan Mukherjee (136) and skipper Andy Edwards (93 not) sharing a stand of 208 for the fourth wicket.

In Division Three, leaders Hatherley & Reddings 2nds stretched clear with a 113-run win at Great Rissington, Tom Coote top scoring with an unbeaten 107 while there was 88 from Alfie Gilbert along with a haul of 6-41 from Rob Dent.

Chipping Sodbury 2nds remain tucked in just behind despite a 48-run reverse at lowly Dumbleton 2nds for whom Adrian Zagoritis was unbeaten on 125.

Lydney 2nds, also battling to stay up, were four-wicket home victors over their Gloucester City Winget counterparts thanks to half centuries from James Bishop and Connor Mullan.

And bottom side Lechlade 2nds won by five wickets at Rockhampton 2nds, Stanley Vas capturing 5-52 from nine before Ben Trass took charge with an unbeaten 103 for the visitors.

Division Four leaders Ullenwood Bharat held off Kings Stanley by ten runs, Raja Shahbaz a key performer with a return of 4-35, while second-placed Hawkesbury Upton eased in by seven wickets chasing 203 away to Woodpeckers.

Gloucester AIW Sports 2nds were two-wicket victors at home to Dymock in the big top-of-the-table Division Five clash.

Harold Senior (47) top scored for the visitors, Fazelkarim Fadra claiming 3-34 from seven. And Sports got over the line with just a ball to spare, Mohamad Sajid hitting 45 to deny Will Green (4-34).
