The Wicketz Bristol community cricket programme has been nominated for an award at the 2018 Voscurs – Bristol’s Social Impact Awards.
The Lord’s Taverners– funded scheme is in the running for the Partnership Award along with JumpStart Food and Fitness CIC, FareShare South West and the Wellspring Healthy Living Centre who joined forces to deliver a groundbreaking project that brought cricket, physical activity and healthy eating to families in Barton Hill.
Wicketz Bristol development officer Crispin Shingler said: “It is fantastic to receive this recognition and it just shows what can be achieved when like-minded organisations are united by a shared purpose.
“Wicketz was proud to be a part of this project and would like to thank our partners JumpStart, Fareshare and Wellspring for the roles they all played in making it a success. It was great to work with such inspiring people.”
The programme started at the Wellspring Healthy Living Centre during the 2018 summer holidays with the aim of promoting healthy lifestyles to young people in the Barton Hill area. The free sessions involved dance and keep fit activities run by JumpStart and cricket coaching from Wicketz Bristol. As the programme developed it also involved regular healthy eating workshops for the children and their parents. The sessions frequently had between 15-20 participants, many from a Somalian background, as well as a number of parents.
The scheme has been nominated for the Voscur award for the way the different organisations worked together. Wellspring Healthy Living Centre offered its sports facilities for free and their kitchen at a discounted rate while food was supplied free of charge by FareShares South West. Jane Rogers from JumpStart led the cooking workshops and fitness activity while Wicketz delivered the cricket sessions.
Since last summer the scheme has continued to evolve and is now being run by the mother of one of the participants, Samira Musse. Although cricket is no longer part of the sessions – due to the lack of a suitable indoor facility – Crispin has continued to offer support to Samira and guidance on a wide range of issues. Samira has also been nominated for a Voscur in the Leadership category.
The winner of the award will be decided by a judging panel and announced at the Voscurs Awards Ceremony on Thursday 31 January 2019.
Wicketz Bristol is based at the Gloucestershire Cricket Board (GCB) and uses cricket as a tool for change, social cohesion and making a difference to the lives of people and their communities in Bristol. For more information please email email@example.com
