Young people are being offered the chance to take their first steps in umpiring at a special workshop for 14-18-year-olds.
The Introductory Training Course at Dean Close School, Cheltenham costs just £5 and participants will have the chance to practice their skills at the Gloucestershire Under 10 Festival later in the year.
Run by the Gloucestershire Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers (GACUS), the workshop on April 12 (10am-1pm) covers everything from the role of an umpire, to key laws of the game and umpiring opportunities. Attendees will receive a Gloucestershire Young Officials polo shirt, some hand-outs and a copy of the MCC Laws of Cricket.
The programme is looking to build on a hugely successful 2018 where nine youngsters attended the course and stood at the Under 10 Festival. Since then four of them – including Charlton Kings pair Bea Ellis and Betsy Mangan – have signed up to do their Stage 1 and 2 training this year.
GACUS secretary Peter Sawyer asked for clubs and schools to support the initiative and promote the opportunity to their junior members.
He said: “Gloucestershire is leading the way in getting more umpires trained and hopefully officiating. We hope that our clubs and schools will encourage some of their youngsters on that road and in turn reap the rewards of having young people with a better understanding of the laws and the role of the umpire.
“You will know best which youngsters at your club or school, male or female, might be right for this course. Perhaps as they get older there are fewer opportunities to keep playing as often as they’d like, or perhaps their skill levels as a player don’t match their keenness and enthusiasm. This is a great way to keep them involved in your club and in the game.”
